Should Work Day and Night

It is said, “Virtuous men are ashamed if rumor surpasses their real ability.” This means that those who tell false rumors but lack actual good works and virtue can delude people and dazzle them for a short time. But as such men cannot evade the opinions of the ages to come in the end, virtuous men should work day and night piling up virtue and layering up good works like a spring of water.

25日昼夜となく勤むべし
「声聞情に過ぐるは、君子之れを恥づ」と。是れ実行実徳なくして虚声虚聞ある者は、或は一人を惑はし、一時を眩ますべけれども、終に天下後世の公論を免かれざるこ
となれば、君子は行を積み徳を累ぬることを、源泉の如くに昼夜となく勤むべしとなり。
