The Way of Relating With Others

Generally, in the Way of relating with others, if you are offended, you should immediately and straightforwardly tell them this. If you cannot straightforwardly tell them, it is better to not be offended at all…. The heart of a gentleman is like heaven. Although it gives forth the thunder of anger when offended, when that is resolved, the clouds recede and it again becomes like the clear and bright heavens, without even a bit of offense remaining in the heart. This virtue of gentlemen is a strength like the sun.

4日人に交はるの道
凡そ人に交はるの道、怨怒する所あらば、直ちに是れを忠告直言すべし。若し忠告直言すること能はずんば、怨怒することなきに若かず。(中略)君子の心は天の如し。怨怒する所あれば雷霆の怒を発することあれども、其の解くるに至りては又天晴日明なる如く、一毫も心中に残す所なし。是れ君子陽剛の徳なり。
