The Bounds of the Heart

There is nothing certain that man understands about the bounds of the heart. If the ears, eyes, nor whole body cannot perceive it, then one cannot understand. However, it is said the heart can be seen without literally looking. There is no way to hide whether you love fame and profit, or love virtue and courage… You should be anxious, but at the same time you should also be trustworthy.

心程人の能く知るものはなし。耳目四体は相見ざれば或は知らず。心に至りては一見せずと云へども、名を好み利を好み、徳を好み勇を好むの類、一として人目に逃るる所なし。(中略)畏るべきの至りと云ふべし。然れども是れ亦頼母敷の至りと云ふべし。
