Cultivate Himself

Worldly praise rarely is something that matches the truth. However, if the heart fears slander and implores for praise, you will pay attention to all the superficial words and your daily acts of sincerity will become rare. For this reason, it is the duty of a gentleman to cultivate himself and endeavour towards truth.

世間の毀誉は大抵其の実を得ざるものなり。然るに毀を懼れ誉を求むるの心あらば、心を用ふる所皆外面にありて実事日に薄し。故に君子の務めは己れを修め実を尽くすにあり。

Saints and sages are esteemed not for their words, but for thier works. Do not waste time with so many words, but pile up sincerity!

聖賢の貴ぶ所は、議論に在らずして、事業に在り。多言を費すことなく、積誠之れを蓄へよ。

Nothing But a Word of Sincerity

Both the way of Heaven and the study of piety are nothing but a single word of sincerity… First is said to be truth. Second is said to be the first. Third is said to be eternity… For this reason, when one does not to keep starting and stoping, but continuously practices the truth and the first, it is eternity.
